Fans streamed into NRG Center for Super Saturday, eager to see for themselves what the Barrett-Jackson Experience is all about in Texas – and they weren’t disappointed. The day was packed with action all around the site and in the auction arena.
The big stars of the day, of course, were in the spotlight on the auction stage! The top-selling car on Saturday (and of the entire auction) was a 1979 Porsche 928 used as the “hero car” in the film “Risky Business.” The crowd went wild when the iconic car sold for $1.98 million – making it the highest-selling @Porsche 928 ever sold at auction. Other incredible vehicles landing in the Top 10 on the last day of Barrett-Jackson’s very first Houston Auction included two stunning 2019 @Ford Motor Company GTs (a Lightweight model that sold for $1,199,000 and a Liquid Blue example that brought in $1,001,000), as well as a 1966 Shelby GT350 once raced and owned by Sir Stirling Moss that went to its new home for $495,000.
The electrifying atmosphere in the auction arena also resulted in more than a dozen new world auction record sales for the day, including a 1988 @BMW M3 E30 once belonging to actor Paul Walker ($154,000), a 2014 @Bentley Motors Continental GTC Convertible ($192,500), a 1971 Plymouth Duster HEMI Custom Coupe ($123,200) and a 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 428 SCJ ($165,000).
A great highlight of the day was the sale of a very special 1956 @Chevrolet 150 used as a U.S. Army staff car at the Sioux Army Ammunition Depot in Nebraska from 1956 until 1964. The restored piece of history brought the gavel down on a winning bid of $425,000 – with the generous bidder donating it immediately back to be auctioned again, which brought in an additional $400,000. And, in an incredible charitable gesture, longtime Barrett-Jackson customer Michelle Mauzy donated another $175,000.
Every penny of the $1 million grand total goes to benefit the Honor Flight Network, which recognizes our nation’s veterans with all-expense-paid trips to the memorials in Washington, D.C. – a trip many of our veterans may not otherwise be able to take.
